So my mom and I have been working the same waitress job for 5-6 years now. She had been waitressing years before, but this is recently. Anyway, about… 15 minutes ago this guy she waited on left and told her to take care. Just that. Prior to this she had talked to him about Italy. Her people are from Florence, this and that, and she said she’s never been. She’s got 8 years of art education and she’s working a waitress job. It’s pretty… Sad and disappointing, I guess. Her and my father divorced 6 years ago and she hasn’t had a real job ever. Just been stuck in a small town she’s not from.

This man who we have never seen before tipped her 1000 dollars for a trip to Italy. Walked out, not another word.

…you know, just when I started to lose faith in humanity

8-years ago, CHP Officer Kevin Briggs talked this young man out of jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge.

That young man’s name is Kevin Berthia.
Today he is 30 years old and married with 2 children.
This week he presented Officer Briggs with an award on behalf of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The story of how Officer Briggs talked Kevin down is remarkable.

As you can see in the picture, Kevin is literally one step away from jumping to his death. But for more than hour, the officer listened to Kevin pour his heart out about his troubles and told him, “I know you think things are bad, but they can get better.”

Kevin says, “Officer Briggs never made me feel guilty for the situation I was in. He made feel like, I understand why you are here, but there are alternatives”

Kevin is just one of countless lives Briggs has saved over his 23 year career.

Briggs, who was promoted to Sergeant five years ago, is humble about what he does. He says, ”they make the decision, when they step back over that rail it takes a tremendous amount of courage”

I salute Sergeant Briggs!

Today at work, I wore this pretty form-fitting outfit because well… because I can. And a woman, probably in her mid to late 30s asks me… “Can I ask you a question without purposely trying to offend you?” Of course I said she could and then she asks me… “Do you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing?” and I kind of confusedly answered that I did feel comfortable in what I was wearing. She then asked “Even though it’s extremely… form-fitting?” And I said “Especially because it’s form fitting.” She then told me that she thought I looked beautiful but asked how I was so comfortable, as a full-figured woman, wearing something tight. And I simply answered “Because I love my body. I love my shape. I love who I am. It took me a long time to be okay with what kind of body I have but now I love it and if I choose to change it, I can. If I don’t choose to, then I won’t. Sure, I have things I don’t like about myself but overall I can’t say I’m disappointed in the way I look or feel in the clothes I choose to wear.”

She then called me her “She-Hero” and bought an outfit just like the one I was wearing.

This is why I love my job.

I am! I’ve been an LGBT activist for the last 5 or 6 years, and was forced out (as bi) when I was 15. I’m glad you love my blog, and I would definitely appreciate some submissions! I love when people message me things like this. I was kicked out of my house a couple days ago because of my brother, so I definitely needed this. Just another example of why we should keep some faith in humanity. Thank you
